How has blogs and the internet changed the way news is reported?

In the “olden days” the government was able to regulate what was reported. However with the development of both blogs and the internet it is extremely difficult to halt a story from being published because of the incalculable vantage points stories are launched from. User-generated content has made it almost impossible to keep controversial news out of the media spotlight. Blogs are “journal-like web site with continuing narrative, generally personal in nature, on a narrow subject” (Vivian, 193). These new “web logs” allow anyone the ability to become reporters and undercover investigators. With this ability, stories are covered by anybody and everybody which sometimes makes the actual news bias. Every person has there own opinion when it comes to situations concerning news, especially riots or politically backed news, this leads to a skewed view of the true events that are taking place. When the government had control over what was published, many events were “censored” from the public, but with the new internet-age it has been much easier to learn about things that are happening all over the world and in the confines of the United States. It is a good thing that these new mass media mediums are bring light to controversial issues but it is not a good thing that the stories are manipulated by those who report them in a biased manner. Blogging and the Internet have created a new world where nothing is “classified” or censored.
